"Candla" - the portuguese way to cross religion and technology

Last week, I had the chance to travel to the beautiful city of Lisbon - a capital full of contrasts, in the very heart of the iberian culture. I have, thus, decided to start a series of articles dedicated to this incredible trip, describing the places that are worth visiting, sharing friendly advices for tourists, and trying to depict the local life and habits.

The first thing I'd like to focus on is an original and useful application, called "Candla". If you are, for some reason, unable to attend a specific church but still want to light up a candle - Candla has a solution for you! You choose the Saint you want to dedicate your candle to, the place and the time, and it lights automatically.

A Candla voting stand

This system works in churches equiped with a votive stands, which are special devices that are connected to the app and able to follow the instructions given by users.
This innovative concept is becoming more and more popular among the portuguese population, 80% of which openly declares being catholic.
Now available on Android and iOS, the Candla mechanism enables 15 000 candles to be lighten per year, and is soon meant to be expanded to other countries.
