"To be European is to be patriotic. To be patriotic is to be European"

For the European day of memory for the victims of totalitarian regimes (did you even know that it exists?), the Vice President of the European Commission - F.Timmermans - has expressed his views on patriotism, nationalism, and on the challenges we face in such difficult times.
"Extremism, nationalism, xenophobia and hatred can still be heard in public speech in Europe. Keeping these memories alive is not only a tribute to the victims but also a way to ensure that these ideologies can be forcefully rejected and such atrocities never happen again" says a press release issued by the Commission earlier today.
With a quite dramatic music in the background, we could hear the deep voice of Timmermans, explaining us the fundamental values Europe is committed to defend. In a lyrical, and even metaphorical style, he warned us against the dangers of nationalism, comparing it to "extremism".
During today's Midday Press brifieng in Bruxelles, a British journalist asked whether this video was a hidden message to Brexiters. The spokesperson didn't answer...
