#TBT July, 6th : International Kissing Day

Launched in 2006, and taking place every day 6 of July since then, the International Kissing Day was meant to celebrate the kiss independently of its context, its meaning or its potential association with feelings. The idea was, indeed, to kiss just for the sake of kissing, regardless of what it would imply between partners.

Throughout history, the kiss has had a lot of symbols behind it. During the Antiquity, kisses were mainly practiced between men, and served as a sign of social recognition or gratitude. Its interpretation has, later, evolved : the kiss of Juda, for instance, was essentially related to betrayal. It is only from the Middle Ages to our modern times that kissing has become a sinequanone demonstration of love and of romanticism. Nowadays, this day is celebrated on a world level, showing that despite the cultural barriers and differences, the act of kissing remains something universal.

A Facebook event has been created for that special day. The description states "The idea behind the International Kissing Day is that many people may have forgotten the simple pleasures associated with kissing for kissing's sake, as opposed to kissing as mere social formality or prelude to other activities."
Another quite funny thing that happens on July, 6th is a contest for the longest kiss. The record is, for now, 31 hours.
